Root canals have a reputation for being painful or complicated, but the truth is very different. Modern techniques, advanced anesthesia, and precise instruments make treatment comfortable, predictable, and highly successful. If your dentist has recommended a root canal, understanding what happens during the procedure can make the experience far less intimidating.

Why Root Canal Treatment Is Sometimes Necessary

A root canal becomes necessary when the inner tissue of the tooth, called the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to:

  • Deep decay
  • A cracked or fractured tooth
  • Trauma
  • Multiple dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Sometimes for no identifiable reason at all

When pulp infection is left untreated, it can lead to severe pain, swelling, abscess formation, and bone loss. Root canal therapy removes the infection and allows you to keep your natural tooth instead of needing an extraction.

A Step-by-Step Look at the Procedure

Root canal treatment at Morris Dental Solutions is completed by our in-house endodontist, Dr. Rosenbaum. With specialty training in complex root anatomy and infection management, he uses detailed techniques and modern imaging to make the procedure as predictable and comfortable as possible.

Here is what you can expect from start to finish.

Step 1: Exam and Diagnostic Imaging

Your dentist begins with a thorough exam and X-rays to confirm infection, locate the affected canals, and plan treatment. This ensures the entire area is treated safely and effectively.

Step 2: Local Anesthesia for Comfort

A root canal is not supposed to hurt. Local anesthesia completely numbs the tooth so you stay comfortable. Patients with dental anxiety may also choose nitrous oxide for added relaxation.

Step 3: Isolating the Tooth

A small protective barrier called a dental dam is placed around the tooth. This keeps saliva away from the treatment area and allows your dentist to work with precision.

Step 4: Removing the Infected Pulp

A small opening is created on the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected tissue is removed, and the canals inside the roots are cleaned, shaped, and prepared for sealing.

Step 5: Disinfecting and Filling the Canals

After the canals are cleaned, your dentist disinfects the space with antibacterial solutions to eliminate remaining bacteria. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called Gutta-Percha to prevent reinfection.

Step 6: Restoring the Tooth

Once the inside of the tooth is sealed, a filling or crown protects it from further damage. Most back teeth require a dental crown for long-term strength and stability.

Recovery After a Root Canal

Most patients return to normal activities the same day or the next. Tenderness is common, but swelling or significant discomfort should be evaluated.

To support healing:

  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the final crown is placed
  • Stick to softer foods for the first 24 hours
  • Brush and floss gently around the area

If discomfort lasts longer than expected or increases instead of improving, contact your dentist right away.

FAQ

How long does it take to recover from a root canal?

Most patients recover within a few days. Mild tenderness is typical and usually improves quickly. If discomfort increases or swelling develops, you should contact the office for evaluation.

Do you always need a crown after a root canal?

Most premolars and molars need a crown because the remaining tooth structure is more likely to fracture after treatment. Your dentist will evaluate the location and condition of the tooth to determine the appropriate restoration.

Is it cheaper to pull the tooth?

Extraction may cost less initially, but replacing a missing tooth often requires additional procedures such as implants, bridges, or partial dentures. In many cases, saving the natural tooth provides better long-term function and can be more cost-effective over time.
